NEWBERRY, S.C. - Former Newberry College defensive end Brian Moore's career was cut short with a tragic vehicle accident in June 2007. On April 12, the Newberry community reminded Brian that while his playing days are done, he will always be an Indian.
At the annual Spring Game, Moore and his family were in attendance. Now confined to a motorized wheelchair, Brian watched from the sidelines as his teammates warmed up for the scrimmage. Prior to the game, the team huddled around Brian as he prepared to address the team.
But one little wrinkle caught Brian by surprise. A small slip of paper from coach Zak Willis. No ordinary piece of paper, but a check for $6,000 to help with his recovery. The generosity of the Newberry community since June was right there on the check. The donations have continued to pour in for the Moore family, as an additional $300 was raised at the Spring Game alone.
But Brian's recovery isn't over. For one of the strongest men on the Indians' team, who now spends his life in a chair, it likely never will be. And just as the recovery process doesn't stop, neither will the support from the Newberry community.
