NEWBERRY, S.C. – Coach Zak Willis and the Newberry College football program announced the initial signing class of 2008 this afternoon.
"This is a class where we had to focus on defense and quarterback," Willis said. "We feel extremely good about the quality of players and students that will be joining us."
Future Newberrians signing letters of intent were:
Tony Mack, a defensive back from Fort Dorchester HS. Mack played in the Shrine Bowl, was named all-State and all-Lowcountry and currently holds the state record in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Mack was the 24th-ranked recruit in the state of South Carolina by The State. He was coached in high school by Steve LaPrad.
Quay Gilchrist, a running back from Abbeville HS. Gilchrist was a North-South All-Star who rushed for over 4,000 yards in his career and scored 63 touchdowns. He was a four-time all-Region player and was the 2006 Region Player of the Year. He was named all-Lakelands twice and was the Lakelands Player of the Year on two occasions. He was also named all-State in 2007 by the Associated Press and the Sports Report. Gilchrist was the 44th-ranked player in the state of South Carolina by HSSR. He was coached in high school by Jamie Nichols.
Evan Rose, a linebacker from Myrtle Beach HS. Rose was a North-South All-Star who made 460 tackles in his career. He was named all-region, Toast of the Coast and All-State. Rose was ranked 32nd in the state of South Carolina by HSSR. He was coached in high school by Scott Earley.
Brian Ehrlich, a quarterback from Madison HS in San Antonio, Texas. He was named all-District 26-5A, throwing 1,924 yards and 24 touchdowns in his senior season as he led his team to the 5A Division II state semifinals. He also rushed for four touchdowns. He was coached in high school by Jim Streety.
John Carnell, a quarterback from Hanahan HS. This North-South All-Star was an all-State player twice, leading the state in passing yardage both seasons. He was the state Player of the Year in 2006 and is ranked third all-time in S.C. high school football in yardage, fourth in touchdowns and sixth in completions. He was a three-time all-region player and was twice named Region MVP. He also participate in Boys State. Carnell was the 32nd-ranked player in the state by the Associated Press and the 59th-ranked recruit by HSSR. He was coached in high school by Jeff Cruz.
Arterio Arnold, a defensive lineman from Greenville HS. He was a North-South All-Star as well as an all-state honoree. Arnold was rated as the 88th defensive lineman nationally by Rivals.com and the 33rd-ranked player in S.C. by HSSR. He was coached in high school by Jim Sosbe.
Deandre Richburg, a defensive end from Berkeley HS. Richburg, the 48th-ranked player in the state by HSSR, was named all-state in his senior season, and was coached in high school by Jerry Brown.
Bruce Bagley, a defensive lineman from Ridgeview HS. Bagley was a North-South All-Star and was named second team all-State. HSSR named him among the Top 100 recruits in the state. He was coached in high school by Ray Jennings.
Ben Hyder, an offensive lineman from Pickens HS. Hyder was a North-South All-Star and participated in Boys State. He was named all-county and all-region twice, as well as earning one all-state honor. Hyder was named the 85th-ranked player in the state by HSSR. He was coached in high school by Brett Turner.
David Jenkins, an athlete from Hunter-Kinard-Taylor HS. He was named to the All-State second team three times and was a four-time all-region player. He was coached in high school by Jermaine Dericott.
Simpson Miller, a running back from Chesterfield HS. He was named all-state twice, all-area once and was a three-time all-region honoree. He was amongst HSSR's Top 100 in the state. He was coached in high school by Steve Tanneyhill.
Chase Gamble, an offensive lineman from Dallas, N.C., and North Gaston HS. He was named all-area and all-conference and played in the North Carolina 4A State Championship. He was coached in high school by Bruce Clark.
Darryl Jones, a defensive lineman from Goose Creek HS. He was a North-South All-Star, all-state, all-region and all-Lowcountry honoree. Jones was HSSR's 92nd-ranked player in the state. He was coached in high school by Chuck Reedy.
Letavious Williams, a defensive end from Ware Shoals HS. This North-South All-Star was coached in high school by Jeff Murdock.
Johnny Brewer, an offensive lineman from Wren HS. Brewer was named to the Anderson Independent all-area team and was coached in high school by Mickey Moss.
Will Newsome, a quarterback from Hartsville HS. The all-region and S.C. Top 100 player was coached in high school by Jeff Calabreze.
Joe Smith, a linebacker from Union County HS. The all-region player was coached in high school by David Lipsey.
Dylan Price, a wide receiver from Hanahan HS. The all-region and all-Lowcountry player was coached in high school by Jeff Cruz.
