NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College quarterback Eric McCollom has been awarded an extra season of eligibility due to a medical hardship, the College announced today.

McCollom, a senior from Camden, severely injured his knee in a pileup in the second quarter of the Indians' game at North Greenville University on Spetember 13, which was the team's third contest of the season.

The former Iowa Hawkeye had completed 22-of-33 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns, despite not playing in the second half of any of the first three contests. He had also carried the ball 12 times for 35 yards and a touchdown. The extra year will give the Indians more stability on offense in the 2008 season.

"I'm really excited about Eric's return to our team next season," head coach Zak Willis said. "I was deeply saddened when his season ended at the North Greenville game because I knew how hard he had worked to get to where he was.

"His return will be great for our program not just from a football standpoint, but from a personal standpoint as well because of how hard he works."
