Indians tie highest NCAA ranking in program history with No. 9 spot in AFCA Coaches' Poll
Tuesday, September 25, 2007

WACO, Texas - The Newberry College Indians have tied their highest ranking since joining the NCAA with a No. 9 ranking in the latest American Football Coaches' Association coaches' poll, which was released this morning. The Indians were also ranked ninth in the November 7, 2006, poll.

The ranking sets up the biggest game in Division II football this weekend, as Newberry's opponent for the South Atlantic Conference opener, Carson-Newman College, is ranked No. 7 in this week's poll.

The Indians jumped two spots from No. 11 in last week's poll. Their 441 points beat out the 439 votes for No. 10 Northwest Missouri State University, which was a national finalist in 2006. Pittsburg State University dropped from No. 7 to No. 19 following a loss to Missouri Wester State University.

With five schools listed in the poll, the South Atlantic Conference has the most teams in the top 25 of any conference in the nation for the second consecutive week. Besides Newberry and Carson-Newman, Catawba is ranked 14th, Wingate is ranked 18th and Mars Hill is ranked 24th. All five teams have 4-0 records entering SAC play this weekend.

The Top 10 clash between No. 9 Newberry and No. 7 Carson-Newman will be available to view worldwide, as part of the NCAA Division II broadband partnership with CSTV. The game will be available at  http://www.cstv.com/ncaa/divii/ . Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Burke-Tarr Stadium in Jefferson City, Tenn.
