Indians rise one spot to No. 11 in AFCA Coaches' Poll
Tuesday, September 18, 2007 | by Newberry one of five SAC teams in top 25

WACO, Texas - The Newberry College football team has risen one spot to 11th in the American Football Coaches' Association Division II Coaches' Poll, which was released today. The Indians are one of five South Atlantic Conference teams in the top 25, which is the most of any conference in Division II.

After receiving 350 votes in last week's poll, the Indians earned 395 votes following a 39-20 victory over North Greenville University on Thursday. This is Newberry's highest ranking since being ranked 9th in the November 7, 2006 poll.

Many schools benefitted from Shepherd's loss to Glenville State, which breaks a 30-game regular season winning streak from the Rams, who drop from 10th to 21st.

Fellow SAC members Carson-Newman jumped to No. 8, while Catawba moves up to 15th and Wingate is now 19th. Mars Hill joins the poll for the first time this season at No. 24.

The Indians wrap up non-conference play on Saturday, as they host the Wolves of the University of West Georgia on the "Weekend of Champions." Kickoff at Setzler Field is slated for 7 p.m.
