Indians jump two spots to No. 12 in AFCA Coaches' Poll
Tuesday, September 11, 2007

WACO, Texas - The Newberry College Indians are ranked No. 12 in Division II in this week's American Football Coaches Association poll, which was released today. The 12th spot marks a two-place jump from last week's ranking of 14th and matches last year's final ranking.

The Indians (2-0) defeated Bowie State University, 41-7, behind 386 rushing yards from the offense and a record-breaking 255-yard day from senior running back Alex Haynes.

South Atlantic Conference rival Carson-Newman College is the only SAC team ahead of Newberry in the polls, with a No. 9 ranking. Other SAC teams in the Top 25 include Catawba, which jumped from 21st to 18th, and Wingate, which enters the poll at the No. 24 position.

The Indians are sandwiched in between Northwest Missouri State, which dropped from 2nd to 11th after being upset by Nebraska-Omaha, and Northwood (Mich.), which beat Findlay last week.

The ranking makes Newberry a consensus No. 12 pick, as the Indians are ranked in that position in all three major polls - AFCA, D2Football.com and Football Gazette. This is also the second consecutive week Newberry has jumped two spots in the poll.

The Indians look for a second consecutive 3-0 start to a season on Thursday night at North Greenville University. Kickoff at Younts Stadium is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
