Wednesday, August 15, 2007

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College players Heath Benedict and Will Newell were named to the D2Football.com Preseason All-American Teams it was announced today. Benedict is a first team selection on the offensive line, while Newell is a second team selection at linebacker.

Benedict, a senior offensive lineman from Greer, S.C., was the 2006 winner of the South Atlantic Conference's Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is awarded to the league's best offensive lineman. A three-year starter, Benedict was a 2006 postseason first team all-Southeast Region selection by three separate publications, while earning one first team All-American selection.

The honor marks the fifth preseason nationwide honor for the Greer native. He was previously tabbed as a first team preseason Division II All-American by Consensus Draft Services, Lindy's College Football Preview and Street and Smith's College Football Yearbook. He was also named to USA Today Sports Weekly's All-Sports Weekly Team, where he was the only Division II player named to the list.

Benedict is the only first-team offensive player from the Southeast Region.

Newell, a junior linebacker from Irmo, S.C., led the South Atlantic Conference in tackles in 2006. His 130 tackles last year were the third-most in a season by a Newberry player. He was a first team All-SAC selection and was ranked 10th in the nation. He was also the SAC Defensive Player of the Week on September 11, 2006, and was a D2Football.com and DAKTRONICS second team all-Southeast Region selection.

This is Newell's first preseason All-American honor. Two players who play for opponents of Newberry in 2007 have made the list as well. North Greenville's Andre Bernardi is listed as a first team defensive lineman, while Catawba's Ron Ellington is a second team defensive lineman.

The Indians open the defense of their South Atlantic Conference title on September 1, as they host Chowan University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Setzler Field.
