Indians ranked 14th in D2Football.com Preseason Poll

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College football team has been ranked 14th nationally in the D2Football.com preseason media poll, which was released today. Senior offensive lineman Heath Benedict was also named a preseason first team All-American by the publication.

The Indians finished 11-2 in 2006, with a 6-1 record in the South Atlantic Conference, to earn their first-ever SAC Championship. Newberry earned the third seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region playoffs, and defeated Albany State, 34-28, in the first round. The Indians fell on the road to second-seeded North Alabama, 38-20, to end the season.

Newberry is the fourth-highest ranked Southeast Region team in the poll, and the highest-ranked South Atlantic Conference team in the poll. The University of North Alabama is No. 4, Delta State University is No. 7 and Valdosta State University is No. 10 in the poll, while Carson-Newman College is ranked No. 22. Other Southeast Region teams ranked are Elizabeth City State University at No. 19 and Albany State University at No. 25.
