USA Today's Sports Weekly names Heath Benedict to "All-Sports Weekly Team"
Tuesday, August 14, 2007

NEW YORK - USA Today's Sports Weekly named Newberry College offensive lineman Heath Benedict to its "All-Sports Weekly" list of first-tier college players to watch in 2007 in its August 8 edition. Benedict is the only Division II player on the list, and one of only two non-Bowl Subdivision players listed.

The honor marks the fourth preseason nationwide honor for the Greer native. He was previously tabbed as a first team preseason Division II All-American by Consensus Draft Services, Lindy's College Football Preview and Street and Smith's College Football Yearbook.

Benedict, a senior offensive lineman from Greer, S.C., was the 2006 winner of the South Atlantic Conference's Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is awarded to the league's best offensive lineman. A three-year starter, Benedict was a first team all-Southeast Region selection by three separate publications, while earning one first team All-American selection.

Benedict and the Indians open the defense of their South Atlantic Conference title on September 1, as they host Chowan University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Setzler Field.
