NEWBERRY, S.C. – Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Andy Carter on Tuesday announced the release of the Newberry College 2007 football schedule. The Indians will play six home games in the friendly confines of Setzler Field and will hit the road for five contests in 2007.
The 2006 South Atlantic Conference champions will open the season on Saturday, September 1 as they play host to Chowan College at 1:30 p.m. This will mark the first time in school history that Newberry plays the Hawks. The Indians will next play host to Bowie State University on Saturday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. The Indians will be facing the Bulldogs for the first time in school history.
The Indians will make the short trek to Tigerville, S.C. on Thursday, September 13 to face North Greenville University at 7:00 p.m. Newberry holds a perfect 7-0 advantage in the series. Newberry defeated the Crusaders by a score of 51-7 in their last meeting which was during the 2004 season.
Newberry will come back home on Saturday, September 22 to face the University of West Georgia at 7:00 p.m. This will mark the first game between the Indians the and the Wolves, who are members of the Gulf South Conference (GSC).
The Indians will kickoff the SAC slate with back-to-back road games at Carson-Newman College on Saturday, September 29 and at Catawba College on Saturday, October 6. The Indians defeated the Eagles 32-18 at Setzler Field last season. Newberry has defeated Carson-Newman 16 times in the series, the most of any other SAC school. Newberry will look to win back-to-back game at Shuford when they face Catawba. In 2005, the Indians won a wild 43-37 double overtime game against Catawba. Last season, Alex Haynes scored a late touchdown and the Indian defense made key stops down the stretch to pick up the 21-14 victory.
Newberry will return to Setzler Field on Saturday, October 13 as they face Mars Hill College for homecoming at 7:00 p.m. The Indians have won two straight games against the Lions. Last season, Newberry pitched a shutout on the road to defeat Mars Hill by a score of 37-0.
The Indians will make the trip to Wingate, N.C. will they will face the Bulldogs on Saturday, October 20. Last season, the two teams met up at Setzler Field in a battle of number one versus number two teams in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region with the Indians coming away with the 36-24 victory. The Indians have won two straight games against the Bulldogs.
Newberry will host Tusculum College on Saturday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. This will mark the first time since 2004 that the Indians will host the Pioneers. Newberry has won two straight games against Tusculum including a thrilling 27-23 victory last season in Greeneville, TN.
Newberry will hit the road for the final time in the regular season as they face rival Lenoir-Rhyne College on Saturday, November 3 in the annual Bisoph’s Trophy game. The Indians reclaimed the Bishop’s Trophy last season with a 45-21 victory over the Bears and also captured their first-ever SAC championship.
In the final home game of the regular season, the Indians will tangle with the Tornadoes of Brevard College on Saturday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. In the only game against Brevard last season, Newberry earned the 45-0 shutout victory at Setzler Field.
“We are very happy with this schedule and look forward to the challenges that it will bring, said head football coach Zak Willis. We do realize that we have that proverbial bulls-eye on our chest but I feel our kids will be up for the challenge."
