COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Newberry College football team was honored on Wednesday morning by the South Carolina State Legislature for winning the program’s first-ever South Atlantic Conference championship and making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
Head Coach Zak Willis and the entire Indian coaching staff and players were presented a framed resolution from local Congressman Walt McLeod on the floor of the legislature.
“I think to be recognized by the legislature in your state is one of the highest honors any American, much less a football coach, can receive, said Willis. This is just a tremendous tribute to what our young people have done and I am just very thankful for the opportunity to be apart of what happened today. I would like to thank Representative McLeod for the work he did to make this a special day for us, our players, and the Newberry family.”
“What a great honor for our football program and our College, exclaimed Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Andy Carter. I am thankful for Representative McLeod and his efforts to make this a reality. Our kids were great! They represented the College with class and dignity as they were introduced as the SAC champions in the presence of House of Representatives.”
