Indians Place Eight on SAC All-Conference Football First-Team

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College had a league-high eight players named to the South Atlantic Conference First Team, which was announced on Monday afternoon.  The Indians also placed two on the second team for a total of 10 players.

Leading the way for the first team is Indians quarterback Josh Stepp.  Stepp was a first-team selection and was named the leagues Offensive Player-of-the-Year.  The senior from Pelion, SC led the SAC in passing touchdowns with 21 while throwing for 2,052 in the regular season.  Stepp holds every career offensive passing record in Newberry College football history.

Other first-team selections included wide receiver Tymere Zimmerman, who was named a first-team selection for the third straight season.  The senior from Bennettsville, SC led the team in receiving with 49 catches for 550 yards and seven touchdowns.  Zimmerman also holds every career and single-season receiving record in Newberry College football history.

Alex Haynes also earned a spot on the first-team at running back.  The junior from Summerville, SC leads the team and the SAC in rushing (862) and all-purpose yardage (1,000).  Newberrys bookend tackles in sophomore Marchant Faustin and junior Heath Benedict earned first-team accolades.  Benedict also wont he Jacobs Blocking Trophy, presented yearly to the top offensive lineman.  Junior placekicker Ryan Lukshis rounds out the first team.  Lukshis led the league in scoring with 69 points.

Defensively, a pair of sophomores in linebacker Will Newell and free safety Derrell Mills lead the way on the first team for Newberry.  Newell, a native of Irmo, SC, leads the SAC in tackles with 108.  Mills leads the conference in interceptions with six.  He was also named a National Defensive Player-of-the-Week earlier in the season by and the Don Hansen Gazette.

On the second team, senior Deshon Rodell is the lone Newberry representative on the offensive side of the ball.  Rodell has rushed for 415 yards and has scored five touchdowns on the season.  For his career, Rodell has amassed 1,473 yards of rushing yardage.

Also on the second team from the defense is junior Jonathan Breaux.  Breaux leads the defensive interior for the Indians, recording 26 tackles.

Wingate Unviersity and Tusculum College followed Newberry with 10 total selections on the First and Second Team.  Ron Ellington was named the Defensive Player-of-the-Year while Lenoir-Rhynes Justin Sanders and Carson-Newmans Brian Brown were named Freshman Offensive and Defensive Player-of-the-Years respectively.
