ROCK HILL, SC - Newberry College quarterback Josh Stepp has been named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, announced by league officials on Monday morning.
Stepp was nearly flawless in the Indians 45-0 shutout victory over Brevard on Saturday. The senior finished 11-of-12 for 258 yards and three touchdowns. He accounted for four of Newberry’s six touchdowns (three pass, one run). Stepp found three different receivers for touchdowns on Saturday and finished with a completion percentage of 92%.
For the season, Stepp is 35-for-48 with 622 yards passing and a league-high seven touchdown passes.
Already the school’s all-time leader in touchdown passes (51), the Pelion, SC native is closing in on becoming the school’s all-time passing leader. He needs just 252 more passing yards to overtake former Indian quarterback Dustin Coats for the all-time lead.
Stepp is the second Newberry player to earn player of the week honors in 2006. Last week, linebacker Will Newell was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
