ROCK HILL, S.C. – Newberry College was selected to finish third in the South Atlantic Conference football coaches' voting released Friday at the conference media day in Salisbury, N.C.  The Indians accumulated 45 points, including one first-place vote.  Eight Indians were selected to the preseason All-SAC teams.

The Carson-Newman Eagles, who were usurped from the top of the South Atlantic Conference standings last year, are expected to reclaim the conference title in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Eagles have won 18 conference titles under head coach Ken Sparks. Carson-Newman received five first-place votes and 60 out of a possible 64 total points.

Presbyterian College, which went undefeated in league play last year en route to winning its first conference title since 1979, was second in the poll. Despite being picked second in the SAC poll, the Blue Hose are ranked in the top 10 in a pair of national preseason polls.

Newberry wide receiver Tymere Zimmerman was named to the Street & Smith’s All-Division II preseason team.

Newberry College placed eight on the preseason All-Conference team, including a league-high five on the first team offense. Quarterback Josh Stepp has already set most Newberry passing records, and wide receiver Tymere Zimmerman is a preseason All-American. Running back Alex Haynes, offensive lineman Heath Benedict and placekicker Ryan Lukshis round out the Newberry first team selections.

Will Newell, a Defensive Player of the Week last season, is a second team preseason linebacker.  Tony Ransom was a first team postseason selection in 2004.  Deshon Rodell was the Indians' second leading rusher last season.
