NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry football team was hard at work again this morning, battling in 97-degree temperatures at 10 o'clock this morning.  The heat prompted head coach Zak Willis to strike this afternoon's practice from the docket and give his men a chance to rehydrate.

"It was a very hot practice out there," Willis said shortly after the morning session.  "There were no major problems with heat--everyone is healthy, but we're going to back off a little bit today.

"I feel good about where the team is, and that we're on our way to having a good year.  We'll be a more consistent team than we were last year, and that should lead to a substantial improvement in our record."

While there was no notable progress or outstanding individual performances today, Willis praised the offensive backs.

"We're in a better place this year than we were this time last year," Willis said of the backfield.  "Both Alex [Haynes] and 2-9 [Deshon Rodell] are in good shape.  Anathan Gibson moved back to runningback and will be our third option.  Titus Davis, our fullback, is our vocal leader back there and does a lot for us."

Other news of note today:
The team released a preliminary two-deep chart that can be found here.  Levi Bennett, a redshirt last year, is slated to start at free safety ... Chuck Huger, a transfer from Charleston Southern, will back up junior Tymere Zimmerman and may see time opposite the All-American receiver ... Thomas Chambliss steps in as a starter on the defensive line after redshirting last season ... sophomore Ryan Lukshis and freshman Matt Eckenroth are neck-and-neck in the battle for punting duties ... Stewart Good will start at outside linebacker as a redshirt freshman ... true freshmen Jare Gault (QB) and Dontay Bennett (OL) are penciled in as part of the second-string offense, joining Eckenroth as the only true frosh on the two-deep.
