NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College announced Friday the resignation of John "Mac" Bryan from his position as the assistant head football coach and offensive line coach.

Bryan has accepted the position of head football coach and athletic director at Emerald High School in Greenwood.  He is a former head football coach and athletic director at Boiling Springs (S.C.) High School for six years.

"Coach Bryan was the right man for the job when we hired him last year and is now the right man to lead Emerald High School's football and athletic program," Newberry director of athletics Andy Carter said. "He did a fantastic job with our offensive line, helping us make huge strides in their overall performance. He will surely be missed, however, we feel that we are in a great position to bring in a top notch coach that will help us take the next big step in the growth of our football program."

Bryan was instrumental in helping Newberry to its best record since 1997, including wins over Division I-AA Coastal Carolina and archrival Presbyterian College.

“Mac Bryan was a valuable asset to both the NC Football program and in the lives of those he touched,” Newberry College head football coach Zak Willis said. “He will be missed and fondly remembered we wish him nothing but the best.”

A search for Bryan's replacement will begin immediately.
