NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College and head football coach Zak Willis announced today the signing of five football players who will enroll next fall at Newberry to suit up for the Indians, raising the total of signees to 44.

The Indians added more muscle to both sides of the line on the second day of the spring signing period.  Dontay Bennett, a 6-3, 290-lb. offensive lineman from Timberland, and Ryan McLain, a 6-0, 275-lb. defensive lineman from West Ashley were both Shrine Bowl participants last December, bringing Newberry’s total commitments who played in the classic to four.

Jamar Porter, a 6-3, 215-lb. end (Union HS), and Jamar Lampkin, a 6-3, 260-lb. end (Timberland HS) will shore up the defensive front as well.  OL Gary Blair, a 6-3, 280-lb. offensive linemen from West Oak High in Westminster makes the sixth offensive lineman to commit this spring.

The 2005 Newberry signing class had members that were being recruited heavily by Division I-A and I-AA programs such as Vanderbilt, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Elon, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, S.C. State, Wofford, Furman, UTEP, and Akron.

Newberry comes off a 5-6 season highlighted by victories over I-AA Coastal Carolina University and rival Presbyterian College in the battle for the Bronze Derby.
