NEWBERRY, S.C. - An exciting new matchup, a home game against a winning NCAA Division I-AA program, and fierce conference competition highlight the Newberry College 2004 football schedule. Newberry director of athletics Andrew Carter released the 11-game schedule today, along with season and individual ticket prices for the upcoming campaign.

Coastal Carolina University, a member of the NCAA Division I Big South Conference, makes the trip north this season after edging the Indians 21-14 on the game's final drive in the Chanticleers' debut game. Under head coach David Bennett, Coastal went on to a winning (6-5) season, and will be a tough early-season test for Newberry.

Head coach Zak Willis' squad opens the season with one new opponent, and one not played since 1973. The Tribe will head to the Orlando area to tangle with NAIA Webber International University. Newberry's home opener features Concord College from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a school Newberry holds a 5-1 record against.

Three home conference dates in October will make or break the Scarlet and Gray's year. Tusculum College and Catawba College, both ranked nationally during last year's contests, visit Setzler Field on consecutive weekends. Mars Hill, which overtook Newberry in overtime last season in North Carolina, will come to town the day before Halloween.

The victims of Newberry's three wins last season get to host the Indians this year. Non-conference North Greenville, winless in the all-time series, will attempt to knock off the visitors in Easley. Lenoir-Rhyne will look to regain the Bishop's Trophy on September 25, and Wingate will try to avenge last season's one-point loss in an October 23 tilt.

National power Carson-Newman has home field advantage on October 2, and Newberry will close out the 2004 regular season with the Bronze Derby battle at Presbyterian the first Saturday of November.

Season packages can be purchased for only $65 a seat, while individual game tickets remain at $15. Call ticket manager Leslie Sligh at 321-5150 to reserve your seats today.
