Newberry comeback thwarted by Mars Hill overtime touchdown

MARS HILL, N.C. - Brandon Sims (Spartanburg, SC) ran 20-yards to Newberry�s five-yard line to set up a short scoring run by Cedric Johnson (Woodruff, SC) in overtime to lead the Lions (3-3/7-3) over Newberry College (2-4/3-6) this afternoon in Meares Stadium.  The game was Mars Hill annual Hall of Fame Game and Senior Day for the Lions.  Mars Hill now leads the series against Newberry 22-10 and has won five straight against the Indians.

After enjoying a 24-3 lead with 7:03 on the clock in the third quarter, Mars Hill allowed Newberry to score three times to send the game into overtime.  Mazi Drummond (Greer, SC) and Tymere Zimmerman (Bennettsville, SC) led the comeback for Newberry.  Drummond scored on an 11-yard run with 4:17 in the third frame and then Drummond connected with Zimmerman on a seven-yard pass with 7:49 left in regulation.  With 1:20 on the clock in the fourth stanza, Drummond threw an 11-yard touchdown strike to Zimmerman to send the game into the extra period.

JaQuan Winston (Richmond, VA) scored the first points of the game on a 19-yard interception return with 11:45 on the clock in the second period to give Mars Hill a 7-0 lead.  Craig Williams (Fayetteville, WV) then nailed a 31-yard field goal with 4:03 left in the half.  Williams was also a perfect 4-for-4 in PAT kicks on the day.  With one second left in the first half, Bryan Moseley (Rock Hill, SC) nailed a 24-yard field goal to send the teams into the locker room with Mars Hill holding a 10-7 advantage.

Sims broke a 70-yard run with 12:01 in the third quarter to extend the Lions advantage to 17-3 before Antjuan Welch (Hephzibah, GA) connected with Rod Dewalt (Prosperity, SC) on a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Lions the 24-3 lead (7:03-3rd) before the late comeback by Newberry.

Sims led the Lions with 125 yards rushing on 17 carries (7.4 avg.) and one score.  He also threw for 51 yards completing 4-of-7 passes.  Johnson added 119 yards on the ground including the game-winning touchdown run.  Dewalt caught four passes for 68 yards and one touchdown reception.  Sammie Woodall (Taylor, MS) led the Lions defense with 10 tackles (8 solo) and a tackle for loss.  Winston made two tackles along with his two interceptions on the day.  Maurice Jackson (Charlotte, NC) and Tellex Lanham (Trenton, SC) each recorded eight tackles.  Lanham added a sack, two hurries and a couple tackles-for-loss.

Drummond ran for 38 yards and threw for 313 yards totaled Newberry offensively.  He was picked off three times.  Zimmerman caught nine passes for 135 yards and two scores.  Terrance Leverett (Ware Shoals, SC) led the Indian defense with a game-high 18 tackles (17 solo), three tackles-for-loss, and a sack.

Mars Hill will end the 2003 season at Tusculum College next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.  Newberry will host Presbyterian College at 1:30 p.m. to end their 2003 campaign.
