Drummond named SAC Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week for the week ending Nov. 1, 2003. Earning honors this week are Newberry quarterback Mazi Drummond, Catawba defensive lineman Marcus Huntley and Catawba punter Pat Huskins.

Drummond, a 6-0, 180, junior from Greer, SC, set a Newberry record with 479 yards of total offense as the Indians defeated Wingate 32-31. The former Greer High School standout accounted for four touchdowns in the game and provided the winning score on the ground with just seven seconds remaining. Drummond ran for 142 yards and two scores and threw for two more, completing 18-of-31 passes for 337 yards. The Indians also broke their single-season passing touchdowns record in the contest. Drummond was 18-for-31 through the air, with a 70-yard bomb and six-yard flareout to Tymere Zimmerman in the game. Drummond set Newberry season highs for rushing attempts and yardage, touchdowns and passing yardage in the contest. Drummond now has 992 yards passing in just two starts for the Indians, who have 2,022 yards passing on the year. He has a team-high efficiency rating of 134.5 and 10 touchdowns against four interceptions for the season. Drummond is also Newberrys leading rusher, with 336 yards rushing this season, with the team-high of three rushing touchdowns. Drummond also had nine receptions, three punt returns and a team-high 10 kickoff returns this season.

Huntley, a 5-10, 255, red-shirt freshman from Morven, NC, was in on four tackles as seventh-ranked Catawba topped #15-ranked Tusculum 27-22. Two of the former Anson County products stops went for sacks, including one that forced a fumble to set up the Tribes final score to take a 27-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers were held to just 18 yards on the ground.

Huskins (Hillsborough,NC/Orange HS), a 6-3, 205, senior, averaged a 42.1 yards over five punts. He had a long of 51 yards that was downed inside the 20. Catawba intercepted Tusculum at the 20 three plays later, leading to the opening score. He had a net punting average of 38 yards.
