NEWBERRY, SC - A trip out of the Eastern time zone and the first-ever game for Coastal Carolina highlight the 10-game 2003 Newberry College football schedule.
The lone Division-I opponent on the docket is the season-opening contest for start-up Coastal Carolina University, led by former Catawba head coach David Bennett.
The Indians also travel to Grand Forks, North Dakota for a first-time meeting against the University of North Dakota.
North Greenville College is the second non-conference game and first home contest on the schedule for the Indians, who will take a week off after UND before the always-tough South Atlantic Conference schedule, which begins with Homecoming at 7 p.m. on October 4, against Lenoir-Rhyne College.
The 10-game schedule is the first for the Indians since 1993. Another significant change to the schedule is the change from 2 p.m. starts to 1:30 p.m. kickoff times, a move initiated by Athletics Director Andy Carter.
“It helps us to play at the same time as everyone else, if for no other reason than consistency,” said Carter.
Newberry has three night games on the schedule, including the contest inside Alerus Arena, a 13,500-seat indoor, turf facility at North Dakota.
“This schedule is the toughest that Newberry has had since the 40’s,” said first-year head coach Zak Willis. “We’re excited about the schedule this year.”
Newberry’s first two home games are 7 p.m. night starts, as is the season opener at Coastal, while the remainder of the schedule (save for a 1 p.m. start at UND) features all 1:30 p.m. starts home and away in league play.
