PEMBROKE, N.C. – Evan Estridge continues to rack up honors for his pitching performance in Saturday's series-clinching win over Mars Hill, this time a Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week nod from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Estridge pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Lions to deliver Newberry its third win in four conference series in 2017. The freshman set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts in the seven-inning affair, more than double his previous best of five punchouts, and issued just one walk.
Mars Hill managed only five baserunners against the Chapin native, including one that reached on an error. At no point in the game did a Mars Hill player advance past first base. The win improved his record to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.07. He is now second on the team with 35 strikeouts.
Estridge becomes the first Newberry player honored at the regional level since Albert Bauer was named Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 24, 2015.
The Wolves host Benedict in a nonconference clash tonight at 6:00 before traveling to Wingate for a three-game SAC series this weekend, where Estridge is expected to make his next appearance.
