ROCK HILL – Evan Estridge has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week for his stellar play at Mars Hill Saturday that allowed Newberry to sweep the teams' doubleheader and earn a win in the series.
Estridge pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Lions to deliver Newberry its third win in four conference series in 2017. The freshman set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts in the seven-inning affair, more than double his previous best of five punchouts, and issued just one walk.
Mars Hill managed only five baserunners against the Chapin native, including one that reached on an error. At no point in the game did a Mars Hill player advance past first base. The win improved his record to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.07. He is now second on the team with 35 strikeouts.
The Wolves return to action tonight with a game against Augusta at the Smith Road Complex beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Wolves are seeking a sweep in the season series after an 9-8 win in 17 innings, the longest game in SAC history, when the teams met in Augusta March 1.
