Wolves end 2016 campaign against Wingate in elimination game

KODAK, Tenn. - Despite a hard fought ninth inning, the Newberry College baseball team dropped to the Wingate Bulldogs 14-10 in the elimination game of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament, on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry's record now stands at 33-19-1 with its elimination from the tournament. The Wolves were ranked sixth in the initial NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings and will await the completion of the conference tournaments and the next regional ranking to see if their NCAA postseason hopes are still alive.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) scored two runs and went 3-5 while Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) went 3-4 and scored one run. Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.), Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) and Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) all went 1-4 at the dish while scoring one run each.

- JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished the game 3-5 with one run scored. Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) scored one run and drove in one while Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) scored one run. Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) drove in three runners followed by Hyman and Bradley who drove two each in.

- Hyman logged 1.1 inning on the bump giving up six hits and six runs for the loss. Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) logged 3.2 innings and gave up six hits and four runs, while tallying five strikeouts.

- Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) gave up two hits and two runs in 1.1 innings while Austin Walker (Charleston, S.C.) also went 1.1 innings giving up two runs and one hit. Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) ended the game on the bump for Newberry tallying one strikeout in 0.1 inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bulldogs put up three early runs in the bottom of the first with Shane Billings scoring the first on Bill Krebs single through the left side. Bradley Brown then homered to right field also sending Krebs home.

Newberry answered in the top of the second with two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. Bass singled to right field sending Hyman home before Bradley scored on an error.

Wingate increased its lead to 6-2 in the second with Bailey Connell and Austin Turgeon scoring on Billings single to left field.

Newberry got back on the board in the third inning when Hyman singled through the right side sending Smith and Gonzalez home.

Wingate answered back with two runs in the third with Zach Little and Turgeon crossing home plate.

Newberry then scored three runs in the fourth inning. With no outs, Totherow singled to the pitcher to send Bass to third who then crossed home plate on a throwing error by the pitcher. Totherow and Kosch were both sent home on Olenchuk’s single through the left side.

Scoring was quiet for Wingate until the sixth inning when Billings scored on Colby Barnette’s ground out before Krebs scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh Connell and Micah Goodwin scored on Krebs double to the right field.

Wingate kept the scoring going in the eighth when Goodwin homered down the right field line.

Olenchuk started the ninth inning off with a leadoff homer over the right field fence to make the score 14-8. Bradley then sent Smith and Sneed home on a single to left center to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 14-10. Smith and Sneed’s runs were the last scored of the game.
