KODAK, Tenn.- A leadoff home run from Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) helped the Newberry College baseball team defeat the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne 5-0, in the play-in game of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Thursday.

The Wolves play the Eagles of Carson-Newman tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. in day one of double elimination.

- Totherow led the team in runs with two while going 1-3 at the plate and sending two runners in. Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) went 1-3 also and scored one run and drove two in. Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) and Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) both scored one run each toward the win.

- Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) logged seven innings on the hill, giving up just four hits. Nations tallied eight strikeouts for the win. Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) ended the game for Newberry tallying four strikeouts in two innings.

Totherow set the pace of the game in the bottom of the first inning when he smashed a ball over the right field fence. The Wolves tacked on two more runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. With one out Sneed singled up the middle sending both Smith and Olenchuk home.

The Wolves got back on the board with one run in the second inning when Totherow scored on a wild pitch.

The score was locked at 4-0 until the eighth inning when Sneed was sent home on a walk. Sneed’s run was the last run of the game from both sides, giving Newberry the win.
