Baseball ends regular season with 6-5 win against Coker

HARTSVILLE- The Newberry College baseball team ended their regular season campaign in exciting fashion defeating the Cobras of Coker College 6-5 in 11 innings, on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves go into the South Atlantic Conference tournament with an overall season record of 32-17-1 and a 13-11 conference record. #5 Newberry will play #8 Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday, April 28 at 4 p.m at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tennessee.


- Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) led the Wolves in runs with three while Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.), Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) and Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) scored one run each.

- The team tallied five RBI with Totherow leading with three. Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) and JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) drove in one runner each.

-  Hunter Hill (Little Mountain, S.C.) logged six innings on the bump giving up five hits and four runs while Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) gave up one run and one hit.  Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) tallied five strikeouts in three innings while giving up two hits. Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) got the win and improved to 3-2 on the year, only giving up one hit in two innings.


The game was scoreless until the second inning when Newberry tacked three runs on the board. Smith scored the first run on Bradley’s ground out to the first baseman for the 1-0 lead. Bass and Hyman then scored on Totherow’s triple to right field to make the score 3-0 in favor of Newberry.

The score was stuck at 3-0 until the sixth inning when Newberry put up another run from Hyman.  The Cobras scored two runs in the sixth inning when Strnad scored on Leech’s  sac fly to left field. Winslow then scored the second run on Coldiron’s single through the right side.

Coker got back on the board in the seventh inning when Allen and Conner scored on the same play and Strnad scored on Winslow’s single.

Newberry tied the game at 5-5 in the ninth with Hyman scoring on Totherow’s single to left field.

The game was sent into extra innings with the score locked at 5-5. Newberry took the win in the 11th inning when Gonzalez singled through the left side sending Totherow home.
