Wolves split against Coker in twin bill on Saturday afternoon

HARTSVILLE- The Newberry College baseball team dropped the first game in the three-game series 6-5 against the Cobras of Coker College before defeating them 4-1 in the second game. The doubleheader was the last regular season conference twin bill for the Wolves. Newberry wraps up regular season conference play tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the Cobras.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Game 1
-Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) and Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) all went 1-4 at the dish and scored one run each.

- Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) and Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) both scored one run each while JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.), Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.), Olenchuk, and Smith drove in one runner each.

- Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) logged five innings and gave up 12 hits and five runs. Nations also tallied five strikeouts. Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) gave up one hit in 0.1 innings while Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) took the loss for the Wolves in two innings giving up two hits and one run.

Game 2
- Totherow went 2-4 at the dish, scored one run and drove one in while Olenchuk drove in two. Sneed and Bass both went 1-3 at the plate and scored one run each. Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) scored one run while Bradley drove in one.

- Zack Kelly (Daleville, Va.) improved to 8-3 on the season taking the win on bump. Kelly logged seven innings, gave up two hits and one run, and tallied seven strikeouts.


HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Newberry scored all five of its runs in the third inning with Bass scoring the first on a wild pitch. Totherow was then sent home on Olenchuk’s single to right field before Gonzalez scored on Sneed’s sac fly to left field. Olenchuk made the score 4-0 when he scored on Smith’s single to left center. The last run for Newberry was scored by Smith when Bradley singled to left center.

The Cobras got on the board in the third inning with three runs. AJ Strnad scored before Darius Coldiron and Jack Leech scored on Thomas Lopez’s single down the right field line. Coker tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth with two runs. Strnad scored on Will Winslow’s single to right field before Winslow scored on Leech’s single through the left side.

Coker took the 6-5 win in the ninth when Lopez scored on Bryson Conner’s double to left center. 

Game 2
Coker got a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Winslow sent a ball over the right field fence. Newberry tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Sneed crossed home on Bradley’s single.

The Wolves then took a 4-1 lead in the fifth with three runs scored. Bass scored his second run of the day on Totherow’s single through the right side to tie the game at 1-1. Olenchuk gave Newberry the lead (and later the win) when he sent Totherow and Kosch home on his single up the middle.
