NEWBERRY- After a 12-3 win against the Trojans of Anderson University, the Newberry College baseball team improved to 10-9 in the South Atlantic Conference and 28-15-1 overall.
The Wolves look to further improve their SAC record tomorrow when they complete the series against Anderson at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the team in scoring with four runs while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) and Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) both went 2-for-4 at the dish and scored two runs each.
- Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.), Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.), and Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) all scored one run each for the win.
- Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) drove four runners in while Smith and Olenchuk drove two in each. Totherow, Bradley and Schrenker all drove one in each.
- Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) improved to 7-1 on the season logging six innings. Nations gave up five hits and three runs while tallying two strikeouts. Hunter Hill (Little Mountain, S.C.) tallied his first save of the season logging three innings and four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans tacked three runs on the board in the first inning with Bailey scoring the first run on Newman’s double to right center. Newman and Cooper then scored on Barrett’s single through the right side.
Newberry took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the first with five runs. Totherow started the scoring off when he was sent home on Bradley’s free pass to first base. Smith was then walked to send Gonzalez home before Schrenker took a free pass to first to send Olenchuk home. Smith and Bradley then scored on Hyman’s single down the left field line.
Newberry put one run on the board in the third with Bradley scoring on Smith’s single to center field. Totherow then crossed home plate in the fourth on a throwing error by the center fielder.
The Wolves increased their lead to 11-3 with four runs in the fifth inning. Hyman hit a sac fly to left field sending Bradley home before Totherow hit a sac fly to center field sending Smith home. Olenchuk ended the inning with single through the left side driving Schrenker home.
Newberry took the 12-3 win in the eighth inning when Hyman reached first base pushing Bradley home.
