Baseball hosts Anderson this weekend for last home series

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team welcomes the Trojans of Anderson University for the Wolves' final home series. The South Atlantic Conference matchup will start on Friday with a single game at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Before the doubleheader on Saturday, Newberry will honor five seniors: Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.), Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.), JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.).

The Wolves enter this series with a 27-15-1 overall record and a 9-9 record in the South Atlantic Conference while the Trojans are 18-24 overall and 8-10 in the SAC.

The team defeated the No. 13 Pacers of USC Aiken 6-2, on Wednesday night.  Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va) went 3-for-2 at the plate, scored one run and drove one in while Schrenker scored one run and drove one runner in. Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.), Bradley, Tommy Passerello (Davenport, Fla.), and Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) all scored one run each. Bradley and Schrenker also drove one in.

Gonzalez sent two runners home while Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) drove one in. Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) logged the win in six full innings on the mound, giving up four hits and two runs. Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) pitched one inning giving up one hit while Rentz threw two innings, tallying three strikeouts.

Last year in the regular season three-game series, the Wolves dropped the first game 7-1 before winning the last two, 4-1 and 6-2.

In game one, Rosenberger was tagged with the loss for Newberry. Baur and Martinez paced the Wolves offensively with a pair of hits apiece. 

In game two, Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) led Newberry offensively with a 3-for-4 performance while Sneed added a pair of hits and runs batted in. Camp tossed 6.1 innings scattering six hits and only allowing one run while striking out seven Trojans and not allowing a walk. John Mason Reynolds (Taylors, S.C.) came on in relief of Camp and faced three batters before giving way to Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) who tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief without allowing a hit and striking out a batter.

In game three, Cromer tossed a complete game while scattering six hits allowing two runs and striking out four batters. Sneed went 4-for-7 in the two games combined with four runs batted in and a run scored. Kosch was 3-for-8 with a pair of runs scored for the afternoon.

Senior Steven Cooper (.400 batting average) has reached base safely in 29 of his last 31 games, while drawing a walk 18 times in his last 11 games. Cooper continues to lead the South Atlantic Conference with 42 walks and a .537 on-base percentage and is third in the SAC with a .723 slugging percentage behind his 18 doubles and eight home runs.

Junior Xavier Peralta is hitting .346 in 23 games, while sophomore Tyler Miller is batting .321 and has reached base safely in 15 of his last 16 games and 36 of his 40 games this season. Senior Brock Goodling, who entered the week second in the nation with 10 saves on the season, earned his 11th of the year at Lander and has notched a save in six of his last seven appearances out of the bullpen. Fellow relievers Andrew Dill and Mitchell Cooksey each have four wins on the season, while sophomore Nick Contafio, junior Ryan Owens and Thomas Smith have each posted three victories apiece.
