NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team fell to 21-9-1 after dropping to Georgia College 13-5, on Tuesday night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) scored two runs while Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) drove in two. Tommy Passerello (Davenport, Fla.) went 2-for-4 at the dish and scored one run while Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) and Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) both went 1-for-4 and scored one run each.
- Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.), and Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) all drove in one run.
- Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) took the loss on the bump, logging 1.2 innings. Hyman gave up four hits and three runs. Hunter Hill (Little Mountain, S.C.) threw one full inning giving up one hit and three runs while Tyler Fuhr (Anderson, S.C.) threw 0.2 innings giving up four runs and five hits.
- Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) logged 3.1 innings while Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) logged 0.1 innings. Rentz gave up four hits and two runs and tallied four strikeouts. Austin Wallker (Charleston, S.C.) pitched one full inning and tallied two strikeouts and Christian Pope (Powder Springs, Ga.) pitched one full inning and tallied three strikeouts and gave up one run and one hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolves got on the board first when Passerello crossed home plate on Olenchuk’s single to center field.
The Bobcats put up three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead with Tanner Giesel, Matthew Miller and Brandon Benson all scoring one each. Georgia College increased its lead to 6-1 in the third when Giesel, Miller and Benson scored one run again.
Newberry got back on the board in the bottom of the third inning with one run Bass. Bass cut the score to 6-2 when he was sent home after Olenchuk reached first base on a fielder’s choice.
Georgia College put four more runs on the board in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. Giesel, Miller, Benson, and Garrett Green all scored one run each for the Bobcats.
Sneed scored the Wolves’ lone run in the bottom of the fourth on Schrenker’s sac fly to right field.
Scoring was quiet from both dugouts until the seventh inning when Georgia College scored two runs and Newberry scored one. Wesley Wommack and Logan Mattix scored the runs for the Bobcats while Kosch scored Newberry’s run on Smith’s single through the left side.
The Bobcats sealed the win in the ninth when Mattix scored the last run of the game.
The Wolves are back in South Atlantic Conference play starting on Friday, March 25 against Wingate University for a three game series. The single game will be played at 6 p.m. on Friday night followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
