Wolves sweep Trevecca Nazarene in twinbill

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team improved to 21-8-1 for the season after defeating the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene in its doubleheader today. The Wolves shut the Trojans out in the first game 9-0 before defeating the Trojans 3-2 in the final game.


Game 1

  • Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) went 3-for-5 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in one. Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) and Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) scored two runs each while Landon Allison (Newberry, S.C.), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) and Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) scored one each run.
  • Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) drove in two runners while Totherow, Smith, Jontrai Jackson (Columbia, S.C.), Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.), and Jason Taylor (Woodruff, S.C.) all drove in one each.
  • Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) took the win for Newberry, logging six full innings on the bump. DeLee tallied  10 strikeouts and only gave up four hits. Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) tallied the save in three full innings, while striking out two.

Game 2

  • Olenchuk, Hyman and Kosch all scored one run each for the win while Gonzalez, Smith and Sneed each drove one in.
  • Zack Kelly (Daleville, Va.) took the win for Newberry, tallying seven innings on the bump. Kelly gave up five hits and two runs while tallying two strikeouts.


Game 1
The Wolves scored their first two runs in the bottom of the second for the 2-0 lead. Smith scored the first when Olenchuk doubled to right field before Olenchuk was sent home on Sneed’s single to center field.

Newberry took a 6-0 lead when they put four more runs on the board in the fourth inning. Totherow singled through the left side to send Hyman home. Gonzalez then reached on a fielding error sending Totherow and Kosch home. Smith finished the scoring when he sent Allison home on a single to right center.

Newberry got back on the board in the seventh with two runs scored by Hyman and Totherow. Totherow reached on a fielding error to send Hyman home before Taylor singled to right center to send Totherow home.

Newberry scored its last run of the game in the eighth inning when Jackson singled to center field advancing Olenchuk home.

Game 2
Olenchuk put the Wolves on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when Allison sent him home on a fielder’s choice.

The Trojans got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with two runs. Bryson Shelton singled through the right side sending Ethan Harrison home before Shelton scored on a balk.

Newberry took the 3-2 win in the seventh inning by scoring two runs. Gonzalez got to first on a free pass that advanced Hyman home. Kosch scored the Wolves’ last run when Smith reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Wolves host Georgia College on Tuesday, March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex.
