Wolves defeat the Trojans with walk-off single from Olenchuk

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team defeated the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene 8-7 from a walk-off single to left center field by Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.), in extra innings on Friday night.


  • JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored two runs and drove two in while Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) drove in one. Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored one run and drove in one while Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) also scored one run and drove in one.
  • Olenchuk, Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) and Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) all scored one run and drove in one each while Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) scored one run.
  • Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) got the start for Newberry pitching 6.0 innings. Nations gave up six hits and four runs while tallying eight strikeouts.
  • Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) pitched 3.0 innings giving up five hits and three runs while Cody Ezzell (Greensboro, N.C.) took the win logging 1.0 inning, tallying one strikeout.

The Trojans got on the board early in the first inning with a two-run homer from Micah Blount. The homer down the left field line also scored Ethan Harrison.

Totherow cut the Trojans’ lead to 2-1 when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field sending Olenchuk home.

Trevecca Nazarene put two more runs on the board until the Wolves took the lead in the sixth inning after scoring six runs.  Totherow and Kosch made the score 3-4 when they both crossed home plate on Bradley’s triple down the right field line. Bradley then scored on a double to left center from Gonzalez to tie the game at 4-4. The Wolves took the lead when Smith advanced to third on a throwing error that also advanced Gonzalez home.  Sneed then doubled down the left field line scoring Smith before Sneed scored on Hyman’s triple to center field.

The Trojans sent the game into extra innings after Bryson Shelton hit a three-run homer to right field scoring Zach Tompkins and Harrison.

Newberry took the win in the 10th inning when Olenchuk hit a single to left center advancing Bradley home for the 8-7 victory.

The Wolves are back at Smith Road Complex against Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday, March 19 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
