Wolves defeat Erskine 5-4 in night game

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team improved to 18-8-1 after defeating the Flying Fleet 5-4, on Tuesday night. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) finished 1-for-2 at the plate while scoring one run. Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) scored two runs while JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored one run.
  • Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) scored one run and drove in one while Daymon Totherow (Danvillle, Va.), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) and Tommy Passerello (Davenport, Fla.) drove in one each.
  • Hunter Hill (Little Mountain, S.C.) tallied his second win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings. Hill gave up one hit and tallied one strikeout. Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) picked up a save, tallying two strikeouts.
  • Danton Hyman (Charleston, S.C.) got the start on the bump, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up seven hits and two runs. Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) logged 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Newberry got on the board first when Bradley scored on Smith’s single to center field in the first inning.

Scoring was quiet from both dugouts until the fifth inning when Erskine tacked on two runs from Tanner Lollis and Sam Cothran. Erskine increased its lead in the sixth inning with two more runs from Tyler Phillips and Kyle Heiss.

Newberry got back on the board in the sixth with two runs. Olenchuk scored on a throwing error made by the second baseman after advancing to third. Kosch then scored on Totherow’s single up the middle.

Newberry confirmed its 5-4 win in the seventh inning with two runs scored. Olenchuk  scored his second run on Sneed’s double to left center before Sneed crossed home plate when Passerello reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. 

UP NEXT
The Wolves host Travecca Nazarene this weekend for a three-game series starting on Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. The doubleheader will be played on Saturday, March 19 starting at 1 p.m.
