TIGERVILLE- The Newberry College baseball team improved to 15-7-1 after defeating the Crusaders of North Greenville 6-5, under the lights on Wednesday night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored two runs and drove one in while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) went 3-for-5 at the plate, drove in two and scored one run.
- Tommy Passerello (Davenport, Fla.), Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) and Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) all scored one run each for the win. Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) and Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) both drove one runner in each.
- Cody Ezzell (Greensboro, N.C.) started on the mound for Newberry pitching 1.1 innings. Ezzell gave up four hits and three runs, while tallying one strikeout. Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) logged four innings, tallying seven strikeouts and only giving up one run and one hit.
- Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) tossed one full inning tallying one strikeout while Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) tossed 2.2 innings tallying three strikeouts. DeLee took the win for the Wolves giving up two hits and one run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolves tacked two runs on the board in the first inning to take an early lead. Smith doubled down the right field line to send Bradley home before Sneed singled to center field scoring Smith.
Newberry and North Greenville both scored three runs each in the second inning. Bradley sent Passerello home off a single through the left side followed by Hyman scoring on Smith’s single to center field. Bradley was pushed to third when Smith singled but then scored on an error by the Crusaders’ center fielder for the third run.
North Greenville’s first run was scored by Nathaniel Maggio when he was sent home from Tony Danvila’s single to left center. Foley George was then sent home when Mitchell Painter singled through the left side. The last run of the inning was scored by Tony Davila because of Josh Black’s single to left center.
The score was stuck at 5-3 in favor of Newberry until the sixth inning when the Crusaders cut the Wolves’s lead to 5-4. Maggio scored the lone run of the inning on Andrew Frazier’s sac fly to center field.
North Greenville tied the game in the eighth inning with a run scored by Andrew Meadows.
Newberry confirmed its win in the final inning of the game when Kosch reached first base on a fielders choice sending Totherow home.
The team is on the road again on Friday, March 11 for a weekend series against Lenoir-Rhyne. The single game will be played at 6 p.m. on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday with a start time of 1 p.m.
