Wolves down Augusta 10-7 in non-conference play

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team defeated the Jaguars of Augusta University 10-7, under the lights on Tuesday night. With the win the Wolves improve to 14-4-1 while Augusta falls to 11-5.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run while Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) went 1-for-3, scoring three runs. Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) drove in two and score one run.
  • JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored two runs and Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), Sam Jones (Greer, S.C.) and Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) all scored one run for the win.
  • Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) got the start on the bump pitching 3.1 innings. Rentz gave up seven hits and six runs and tallied two strikeouts. Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.) pitched 1.1 innings giving up five hits and one run while Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) pitched 0.1 innings.
  • Austin Walker (Charleston, S.C.) logged 2.0 innings and the win, giving up one hit and tallying two strikeouts. Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) logged 0.1 innings giving up one hit while John Mason Reynolds (Taylors, S.C.) pitched 1.0 innings giving up two hits.
  • Cody Ezzell (Greensboro, N.C.) took the save for Newberry pitching 0.2 innings, tallying one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Newberry put four runs on the board in the second inning with Sneed scoring the first run off Jones’ single to right center. Jones then scored on a wild pitch from Augusta’s pitcher to make the score 2-1. Bradley and Totherow then scored on an error committed by the shortstop.

Augusta cut Newberry’s lead to 4-2 in the third inning when Janousek scored on a throwing error made Newberry. Augusta then took a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth by scoring five runs. Rau scored before Gilbert and Taylor both scored on Thompson’s single to center field. Roberts and Thompson ended the half inning for Augusta when they both scored on Boose’s single to left field.

Newberry scored one run in the fourth when Totherow crossed home plate off a sac fly from Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.).

Olenchuk tied the game at 7-7 with a homer down the left field line also sending Gonzalez home. Newberry sealed the win in the seventh inning by scoring three runs. Kosch scored the first run followed by Totherow who scored the second run of the inning when Gonzalez grounded out to the pitcher. Bradley scored the last run of the game because of a throwing error made by the shortstop.

UP NEXT
Newberry hosts Lincoln Memorial this weekend for its South Atlantic Conference series. The single game will be played on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
