Wolves host Augusta on Tuesday night for single game

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team looks to defeat the Jaguars of Augusta University in a non-conference single game on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

The team defeated Catawba College 9-7 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon.

  • Derek Olenchuk led the offense today going 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring two runs. Daymon Totherow drove three in, scored one run and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Jeff Sneed scored two runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate and driving in one.
  • Robert Kosch, JoJo Bradley, Michael Gonzalez, and Nolan Schrenker all scored one run each for the win. Bradley also drove in two while Kosch drove in one.
  • Hunter Hill got the start for Newberry on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings. Hill gave up six hits and five runs while tallying three strikeouts.
  • Mike DeLee recorded 1.2 innings on the bump tallying two strikeouts while Charlie Fessler pitched 1.1 innings giving up three hits and two runs. Cody Ezzell worked hard for win, pitching 2.2 innings giving up no hits or runs.

Last season the Wolves dropped to Augusta 5-4 on the road.

DeLee was tagged with the loss for Newberry while Adam Grice picked up the win. The Jaguars tallied 13 hits to the Wolves’ nine. Newberry was just 3-of-13 with runners in scoring position while GRU Augusta found five hits with runners on second or third.

Freshman southpaw Robert Westenrieder started his first collegiate game and went six innings on the bump, scattering eight hits while giving up three runs, two of which were earned, walking three and struck out a pair.

Senior Matt Chapman  threw an inning of relief and surrendered a run on one hit. Sophomore Patrick Clarey tossed an inning of scoreless relief, scattering two hits.

Four Wolves totaled multi-hit outings on the afternoon as Kosch, Bradley , Albert Baur and Brandan Sheridan each went 2-for-5. Baur drove in two runs while Sheridan and Sneed each batted in one. Kosch scored three of the four runs.


The Jaguars won 8-7 in 11 innings against Montevallo on Sunday afternoon.

Junior lefty Will Thompson got the start and pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits before being relieved by junior right-hander Will Robertson and right-handed senior CJ Reed. Sophomore transfer Casey Lenoch came in and pitched 5.2 innings, carrying the Jags to an extra-inning win.

Drew Taylor's second hit of the game came in the eleventh inning on a single to right field.  Senior Connor Gilbert (2-4) walked for his second time of the game and then the Falcons intentionally walked sophomore Jim Wagner (2-4) to load the bases with no outs. Cole Thompson drew a walk to score the run and win the game. The game went to extra innings and in the top of the 11th inning, Lenoch's walked his first batter of the game. Lenoch struck out the next batter, his seventh of the day, and Cole Thompson caught the base-runner stealing second, his second of the day, to save the inning.

Newberry hosts Lincoln Memorial this weekend for its South Atlantic Conference series. The single game will be played on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
