Wolves' ninth inning rally falls short

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team fell to the Bearcats of Lander University 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Wolves fall to 11-3-1 overall while the Bearcats improve to 9-5.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.) led the offense scoring two run and going 3-for-5 at the plate. Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) drove in two runs while scoring one for the Wolves.  
  • Tommy Passerello (Davenport, Fla.), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.), Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) and Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) all scored one run each for Newberry.
  • Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C) took the loss for Newberry on the bump, pitching three innings. Hyman let up seven hits and five runs, while tallying three strikeouts.
  • Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C) pitched 0.2 inning, giving up three hits and one run. Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five hits and two runs.
  • Tyler Fuhr (Anderson, S.C.) logged one inning giving up one hit while Austin Walker (Charleston, S.C.) pitched 0.1 innings also giving up one hit. Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) ended the game pitching 1.2 innings, tallying two strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bearcats put three runs on the board before Totherow scored the Wolves’ first run in the first inning. Newberry cut Lander’s lead to 3-2 when Bass scored on Bradley’s single to shortstop.

Lander increased its lead in the fourth inning to 6-2 by scoring three runs. Passerello scored Newberry’s lone run of the fourth inning when he scored on a pass ball.

Newberry scored two runs in the fifth making the score 5-7 in Lander’s favor. Smith scored when Bass reached on a fielder’s choice sending Smith home. Sneed scored the second run of the inning when he was sent home from Kosch’s single to left field.

The Wolves scored their last two runs of the game in the ninth inning, giving Lander the 8-7 win. Totherow scored unearned on a pass ball followed by Kosch who scored on a wild pitch by the pitcher.
