NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team downed Young Harris College, 10-7 in the nightcap of the Newberry Round Robin, on Sunday night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run while driving in three. Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) and Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) both went 1-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs apiece.
- Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) put two runs on the board while Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.), Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.), Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.), and all scored one run each.
- Hunter Hill (Little Mountain, S.C.) started the game on the bump, pitching 5.0 innings. Hill gave up 10 hits and six runs while walking one.
- Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) pitched 3.1 innings, tallying three strikeouts and giving up one run. Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C) tossed 0.2 innings, tallying the save. Rentz gave up one hit and struckout one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mountain Lions put three runs on the board before the Wolves scored. Young Harris scored one run in the first from Nick Sexton and one run in the second from Casey Selfe. The Mountain Lions put up their third run in the fourth inning when Selfe drove Zach Beggs in on a RBI groundout.
Newberry took a temporary 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Olenchuk scored the Wolves’ first run when Bradley Nichols (Winter Springs, Fla.) hit a sac fly to centerfield. Sneed was sent home when Bass hit a RBI single to right field to make the score 3-2. Totherow then scored on a throwing error after stealing third to tie the game at 3-3. Bass gave Newberry the lead (4-3) when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Kosch.
The Mountain Lions took the lead back at 6-4 with three runs in the fifth inning. Sexton scored his second run of the game on Brett Westmoreland’s single to left field. Zach Odom and Westmoreland then scored on Zach Wall’s double to center field.
The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to gain a 7-6 lead. Gonzalez scored the first run of the inning when Sneed drew a bases loaded walk. Olenchuk and Schrenker then scored on Totherow’s single through the right side.
The Wolves sealed the win in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring three runs. Gonzalez reached first base on an error by the shortstop which sent Kosch home for the first run of the inning. Schrenker and Gonzalez ended the scoring for Newberry with two runs on Sneed’s single to right field.
Young Harris made things interesting in the ninth inning with a bases loaded rally. Westmoreland drove in a run with a one-out single, but Totherow made a diving catch in right center to end the Mountain Lion threat.
Newberry travel to Due West to play Erskine on Tuesday, February 16 at 2 p.m.
