NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team defeated the Crusaders of North Greenville University 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon. With the win the team improves to 5-1-1 overall while North Greenville drops to 1-3.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in two.
  • Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in one while Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) went 2-for-4, scored one run and drove in one.
  • Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.), and Peyton Spangler (Clinton, S.C.) all scored one run each in the game.
  • Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) took the win for Newberry, giving up two hits and zero runs in 5.2 innings pitched. He also tallied five strikeouts on the mound, walking three. Westenrieder now has a 2-0 record for the year.
  • Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) pitched 1.1 innings on the bump, tallying three strikeouts and walking one. Charlie Fessler (Summerville, S.C.) logged 0.1 innings, giving up two hits and three runs while John Mason Reynolds (Taylors, S.C.) pitched 0.2 innings, tallying one strikeout.
  • Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) earned the save for the Wolves after pitching 1.0 innings, tallying one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolves got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Bradley scored on a RBI single to left field by Smith. Newberry made its lead 2-0 in the fourth inning when Smith scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.).

The Wolves extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning when Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) grounded out to second base sending Gonzalez home.

Newberry scored its last three runs of the night in the seventh inning. Bradley singled through the left side pushing Spangler and Kosch home making the score 5-0. Olenchuk then doubled down the left field line scoring Bradley.

North Greenville cut Newberry’s lead by scoring three runs in the eighth inning. Drew Lipscomb doubled to left center to send Nathaniel Maggio and Jessup Polk home. Foley George scored the last run of the game when Josh Black grounded out to the shortstop.

UP NEXT
The Wolves host Brevard, Young Harris and King on Friday, February 12 to Sunday, February 14 as part of their Newberry Round Robin. Newberry will play Brevard on Friday, February 12 at 5 p.m. before they play King on Saturday, February 13 at 6 p.m. The Wolves will end the tournament with a game on Sunday, February 14 against Young Harris at 3:30 p.m.
