Wolves drop one, tie another in even split of three-game series with Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C.- The Newberry College baseball team dropped to Belmont Abbey College 6-2 before tieing the nightcap 1-1, on Saturday afternoon. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

First Game

  • Trejon Smith went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored one run while Daymon Totherow went 1-for-4 at the plate and scored one run for Newberry.
  • Jacob Bass and Totherow both drove one run in each for the game.
  • Hunter Hill took the loss for Newberry, giving up nine hits and five runs in 3.2 innings pitched. He also tallied four strikeouts on the mound, walking one.
  • Christian Pope logged 1.2 innings on the mound for the Wolves, giving up two hits and one run.
  • John Mason Reynolds pitched 0.2 innings, tallying one strikeout.

Second Game

  • Bass went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored the lone run for Newberry.
  • Derek Olenchuk and Tommy Passerello each went 1-for-4 at the plate while Totherow drove in one.
  • Zack Kelly pitched 6.0 innings, giving up three hits and striking out nine. Robert Westenrieder tossed 1.1 innings, giving up three hits and the Crusaders’ lone run.
  • Charlie Fessler logged 1.2 innings on the mound, tallying three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Game
The Wolves struck first in the top of the second inning when Smith scored off a RBI single from Bass.

Belmont Abbey scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Kevin Elefante put the Crusaders on the board when he homered to left center to tie the game at 1-1. Nick Benlich then crossed home plate when Connor Kwalwasser singled to left field. Kwalwasser extended the lead to 3-1, scoring off a fielder’s choice from Nick Nunziato.

Newberry cut Belmont Abbey’s lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning with a home run to right field from Totherow. Totherow’s home run was the last time the Wolves scored for the rest of the game.

Belmont Abbey scored two more runs in the fourth and fifth to conclude the 6-2 scoring. Rosenbaum made the score 5-2 when Nunziato doubled to left field sending him home. Clarke scored the Crusader’s last run when Rosenbaum hit a sac fly.

Second Game
The game was scoreless until the third inning when Bass scored off Totherow’s sac fly to right field. The run was Newberry’s only run for the whole game.

Newberry had the 1-0 lead until the eighth inning when Kayden Krause scored on an error made by Bass.
