FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The Newberry College baseball team defeated No. 17 Nova Southeastern, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves have now taken down top-20 nationally ranked teams in the first two games of the season.


  • Daymon Totherow led the team with three runs and an RBI, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Michael Gonzalez and Derek Olenchuk both had two RBIs apiece and Gonzalez scored two runs.
  • Olenchuk, Robert Kosch and JoJo Bradley all contributed one run each to the win.
  • Robert Westenrieder earned the win for Newberry, giving up three hits and one run in 4.1 innings of relief. Hunter Hill started the game and pitched 4.2 innings, tallying four strikeouts and giving up three runs.


The Wolves came out of the gate strong scoring three runs in the first inning. Totherow scored the first run off a single to right center by Bradley. Olenchuk then singled through the right side advancing Gonzalez to second and scoring Bradley. Jeff Sneed ended the top of the first inning with a single through the left side that scored Gonzalez.

The Wolves didn’t score again until the third inning when Totherow was sent across the plate on Gonzalez’s ground out to second base.

Newberry got back on the board in the eighth inning with Gonzalez and Olenchuk both scoring one run each. Gonzalez was sent home on a single by Olenchuk before Olenchuk scored off a wild pitch.

Newberry ended the game on a high note by scoring two runs in the ninth inning. Totherow came up to bat and tripled to right field to send Kosch home. Totherow scored the last run off Gonzalez’s single through the left side.

The Wolves end their weekend in Florida on Sunday, January 31, when they play the Buccaneers of Barry University at noon. The game will be played at Feinbloom Field in Miami Shores.
