ROCK HILL – Newberry College senior Cole Cromer has been named the final regular-season AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday evening. This is the first time Cromer has been bestowed the honor and the first SAC Pitcher of the Week honor that Newbery has received since Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) won the distinction in 2013.

The North Augusta, S.C., native tossed his second, complete-game shutout of the season in the Wolves’ 2-0 victory over the Coker Cobras on Saturday afternoon. The win sealed the series sweep of the Cobras and extended Newberry’s winning streak to 13 games, currently the second longest winning streak in NCAA Division II.

Cromer went seven innings, scattering four hits and striking out eight Cobra batters, a season high, en route to his eighth win of the season. He did not surrender a walk while allowing only one runner to advance past second base.

For the season, Cromer has compiled an 8-3 overall record with a 3.69 ERA and a 7:1 strikeout to walk ratio in 70.2 innings pitched. On the year, he has logged five complete games, two shutouts, 49 strikeouts and a .273 opponent batting average. He currently leads the league in wins, complete games and shutouts while finishing the year in top 15 in innings pitched, ERA and strikeouts.

The right-hander led the scarlet and gray to a 33-16 overall record, the most recorded wins in program history dating back through 1981. This also marks the first time during that time period Newberry has had back-to-back 30 win seasons. The 21 wins in South Atlantic Conference action marks the most wins since joining the league in 1996 and the first time any Newberry squad has finished in the top three slots in the final SAC standings.

Cromer and the Wolves will kick off the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Tournament this Friday at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C. The game is scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. first pitch.
