PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves baseball team has jumped up three spots in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Southeast Region Poll, as announced Monday.

Newberry takes the fifth spot this week, the highest the Wolves have ever been ranked in this publication, after tying for eighth last week. The Wolves went 5-0 in the past seven days with a pair of sweeps over Erskine and Coker.

Catawba (35-10) retains the top spot in the rankings with seven first place votes and 79 points. UNC Pembroke (34-10) switches places with Mount Olive (35-12) to sit just behind the Indians. The Braves received one first place vote and 72 points while the Trojans hold down third with 62 points.

North Georgia (30-12) sits just ahead of Newberry with 54 first place votes while Columbus State (32-12) trails the Wolves with 34 points.

Armstrong State (27-11), Flagler (30-12), Erskine (32-15) and USC Aiken (28-13) round out the top 10 in the rankings.

Newberry is one of two schools representing the South Atlantic Conference (Catawba) and one of three in the state of South Carolina (Erskine and USC Aiken).

The Wolves completed the regular season with a 33-16 mark, the most wins in school history dating back through 1981. The scarlet and gray also posted 21 wins in South Atlantic Conference play, the most since joining the league in 1996.

Newberry enters the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Tournament this coming weekend as the second seed, the first time in the conference that the scarlet and gray have finished in the top three in the final SAC standings. The Wolves will begin their road to the SAC title at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C., on Friday with a first pitch scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
