Baur's blast lifts Wolves past Coker

NEWBERRY – Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) started senior weekend off with a blast, literally. The senior went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and scored three times in the Wolves’ 8-2 victory over the Coker Cobras on Friday night.

This was the four outing with four or more hits for Baur this season and the sixth time he has amassed four RBIs.

Newberry improves to 31-16 on the year and 19-8 in South Atlantic Conference play, but more importantly the win extends their winning streak to 11 games. Coker falls to 15-27 overall and 6-20 in league action.

The Cobras had the first opportunity to score in the top of the first as they had first and third with one out. However, Wolves’ starter Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) escaped unscathed as he recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) led off the bottom of the frame with a walk and two batters later Baur delivered an RBI double to the left-center gap to score Kosch for the first run of the game.

Coker starter Forrest Arnold hit the next two batters to load the bases for D.J. Martinez who recorded a RBI groundout to put the lead to 2-0 in favor of Newberry after the end of the first inning.

Baur created another run in the third as he laced his second double down the leftfield line and scored on a single off the bat of JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) to extend the lead to 3-0.

The fourth inning saw Baur make history as he hit a towering fly ball to right field that cleared the fence for his 16th home run of the season and the 29th of his career. The 29th home run officially ties him for first in the all-time Newberry record books.

Before Baur hit his home run, Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) reached on an error and scored on a triple by Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.). Schrenker crossed the plate on Baur’s home run to make the score 6-0 at the end of the fourth inning of play.

Schrenker doubled and scored on a single by Baur in the seventh before Martinez singled, advanced to third on a throwing error to set up a Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) RBI-single. Sneed’s single ended the scoring for Newberry with eight runs, but the Cobras scratched across their lone run off of Camp in the top of the inning.

Camp went eight complete innings and scattered seven hits, allowing one run while striking out eight batters. He did not allow a walk en route to earning his eighth win of the season (8-2). This is the third start in a row that Camp has had 6+ strikeouts and the seventh start of the season with six or more fanned batters.

Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) came on in the ninth to finish out the game and allowed one run on two hits, struck out three and walked one.

Arnold took the loss for Coker, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits. Korbin Causey and Will Sutton logged the final two innings for the Cobras.

Senior weekend will conclude tomorrow with a twin bill between Newberry and Coker. The senior festivities will begin at 12:45 p.m. with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
