McElwee has spent the majority of his major league career with the Low-A Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League and the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League.

Last season he made 25 appearances in Hickory with a 2-0 record, 57 strikeouts and a 4.25 ERA in 36.0 innings. However, he got better as he was progressed up the ladder. The right-hander logged 21.2 innings in Myrtle Beach and compiled a 2-0 record, 27 strikeouts and an outstanding 0.42 ERA before making a short stint with the Roughriders to end the season. In Frisco his numbers went with the temperature, they got hotter. He threw nine innings and allowed one run on four hits while fanning eight batters for an even 1.00 ERA.

McElwee was a 20th round selection in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Rangers. He came to Newberry out of college and took part in five seasons for the scarlet and gray, leaving as the most decorated pitcher in program history. In his five season he logged 263.1 innings with a 3.86 ERA and a 17-12 record. He went the distance four times and took part in two shutouts while picking up a save. He struck out 318 batters in his tenure and opposing batters hit just .257 off him in 1,160 at bats.

In the Newberry College record books McElwee has the eight lowest ERA, the sixth lowest opponent batting average and is second in innings pitched. His 10.87 strikeouts per game, 318 strikeouts and 46 starts are the most by any player to wear a Newberry uniform while tallying the fifth most wins.

McElwee was a first team all-SAC selection and an honorable mention all-Southeast Region pick by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

So far on the season McElwee has appeared in three games, logging 4.1 innings, the second most on the team. The bases have been loaded all three times McElwee has entered the game. He has allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two batters in those outings.
