PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Newberry baseball is currently riding an eight game winning streak heading into today’s non-conference game with the Erskine College Flying Fleet. They are one game shy of tying the longest streak in school history but that is not the most impressive accolade.

The Wolves have swept the last three South Atlantic Conference series in a row, the first three consecutive sweeps in school history. Two of the three came on the road at Wingate and in Hickory, N.C., versus Lenoir-Rhyne. This past weekend they swept Carson-Newman for the first time since 2011

Newberry started off the season ranked in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Southeast Region poll, another first in school history, and now have returned into the top 10.

The Wolves (28-16, 18-8 SAC) are tied for eighth in the lineup with the Erskine Flying Fleet with 28 points each. Newberry is one of two SAC schools and one of three South Carolina schools represented.

The number eight spot matches the highest ranking Newberry has been bestowed this season from the poll released back on February 16.

Catawba (33-9) takes the top spot with 94 points and six first place votes, but Mount Olive (32-10) is nipping at the Indians heels with 88 points and received three first place nods while UNC Pembroke (29-10) is third with 78 points and a single first place vote.

North Georgia (26-11, 62 points) and Flagler (28-10, 58 points) round out the top five while Armstrong State (27-11, 44 points), Columbus State (29-11, 37 points), Erskine, Newberry and USC Aiken (27-13, 28 points) complete the top 10.

This will be the final NCBWA Southeast Region poll before the official NCAA Region Poll is released next week.

The Wolves will finish out the last week of the regular season with a home-and-home series with the Erskine Flying Fleet on Monday and Tuesday, April 13-14, before hosting the Coker Cobras in the SAC series finale on Friday and Saturday, April 17-18.

Newberry faces off with the Flying Fleet today in Due West with a 2 p.m. first pitch before returning to the Smith Road Complex on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
