NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves dropped a 16-4 contest to the visiting Lander Bearcats on Wednesday evening as the Bearcats take the series sweep after defeating the Wolves 3-2 last week in Greenwood.

Lander pounded out 15 hits and went 11-for-23 with runners on base and 8-for-14 with runners in scoring position to plate their 16 runs.

The Wolves went 2-for-19 with runners on and 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position while leaving 13 runners on base in the contest.

Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) was the only player for Newberry to notch multiple hits at the plate with a 2-for-2 effort and scored a pair of runs.

Thomas Berry and Alex Conaway both tabbed three hits apiece to lead Lander. Berry went a perfect 3-for-3 on the night with a double, home run, six runs batted in and four runs scored while Conaway picked up his three hits in five plate appearances and tagged a double and three runs driven in. Colby Lusignan also drove in three runs while Zach Giczewski hit a home run in a pair of hits in five chances with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Bearcats got on the board first in the top of first with a three-run home run from Berry but Newberry responded with a RBI double to left center off the bat of Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) to cut the lead to 3-1 after first frame.

Lander blew the game open with a six-run second inning, highlighted by a one-out, two-run home run off the bat of Giczewski to carry a 9-1 lead after one and a half innings of play.

The visitors from Greenwood tallied two more in the top of the third before the Wolves responded with one more as Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on an error to score a run and make the score 11-2 in favor of Lander.

The Bearcats added five more in the top of the fourth as a two-RBI single from Conaway with two away highlighted the scoring and extended the lead to 16-2.

The Newberry pitching staff strung zeros together for the rest of the ball game as they did not allow a Bearcat runner past second base after the fourth inning.

However, the Wolves offensive drought continued as they could not find an answer for Lander until a wild pitch caused a run to cross the plate in the bottom of the eighth, changing the deficit to 16-3.

Newberry threated in the bottom of the final frame as back-to-back walks with one away gave some life to the offense. A line-out put the Wolves down to their final out but a pinch hit single to right off the bat of Tommy Passerello (Davenport, Fla.) loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. A wild pitch in the next at bat forced the score to 16-4 before another walk and a strikeout looking served as the final two batters in the contest.

The Wolves fall to 12-9 on the season while Lander improves to 10-11.

Newberry will hit the road for six road games before returning home to the Smith Road Complex next weekend. They will take on the Brevard Tornados this Friday and Saturday, March 13-14, before traveling to Mars Hill to face the Lions on Monday, March 16, in South Atlantic Conference action.
