NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team completed the season sweep of the Davis & Elkins Senators on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 victory to move to 12-7 on the year. Davis & Elkins falls to 1-5 so far in their 2015 campaign.

Senior first baseman Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) plays the hero for the Wolves as he tallies his third multi-home run game of the season, going two-for-three at the plate with two home runs and four runs batted in.

Sophomore Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) also added a pair of hits and senior Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) drove in a pair for Newberry.

Senior right hander Cole Cromer (North Augusta, S.C.) picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season after tossing seven complete allowing one hit and striking out five.

Fellow senior Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) and junior Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief to complete the shutout.

The game started as a pitcher’s duel as Davis & Elkins starter Tyler Honeycutt went seven complete allowing one earned run and just three hits while striking out five and walking one.

The first five and a half inning went scoreless as Newberry had a chance to score in the bottom first as they had runners at second and third with two outs but could not convert. A two out double in the bottom of the second was also denied.

The Senators picked up a one out double in the top of the second but Cromer worked out of the jam.

Zeros filled the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth as Baur deposited a first pitch slider from Honeycutt over the scoreboard in right field to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Davis & Elkins had their best chance to score in the top of the eighth as a leadoff single and a fielding error on a bunt put runners on first and second with no outs. However, the next bunt attempt rolled right back to Rosenberger and he threw to third base for the force out. After a strikeout to put two away, a walk loaded the bases for the Senators. A ground ball to Baur at first ended the threat and left the score at 1-0 after seven and a half innings.

Kosch led off the bottom of the eighth with a single back up the middle and was followed up by a walk to JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.), putting runners on first and second with no outs. With a 1-0 count Baur took a fastball over the right center field fence for his second home run of the day, a three run blast to put the Wolves up 4-0.

The inning continued for Newberry as Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) drew a walk and Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) got a pinch hit single to have the Wolves in scoring position again. Freshman Sam Jones (Taylors, S.C.) was hit by a pitch in his first collegiate at bat to load up the bases for Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) who hit a high chopper over the third baseman for a double and two runs batted in, pushing the score to 7-0.

The Senators tried to make a late push as a one-out single advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out to the second baseman. Nations induced a fly ball to right center that was tracked down to end the game.

The Wolves travel to Tigerville, S.C., for a 3 p.m. non-conference game with the North Greenville University Crusaders before returning home on Wednesday to host the Lander University Bearcats at 6 p.m.
