AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Newberry College Wolves dropped a heartbreaker to the GRU Augusta Jaguars on Tuesday afternoon. The Wolves fought back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at four each, but the Jags scratched a run in the bottom of the ninth to take the game 5-4.
The Wolves drop to 6-4 on the year while GRU Augusta improves to 4-3 and 2-1 in the series this season. Sophomore Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) was tagged with the loss for Newberry while Adam Grice picked up the win. The Jaguars tallied 13 hits to the Wolves’ nine. Newberry was just 3-of-13 with runners in scoring position while GRU Augusta found five hits with runners on second or third.
Freshman southpaw Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) started his first collegiate game and went six innings on the bump, scattering eight hits while giving up three runs, two of which were earned, walking three and struck out a pair.
Senior Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) threw an inning of relief and surrendered a run on one hit. Sophomore Patrick Clarey (Megget, S.C.) tossed an inning of scoreless relief, scattering two hits.
Four Wolves totaled multi-hit outings on the afternoon as Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.), JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.), Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) each went 2-for-5. Baur drove in two runs while Sheridan and Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) each batted in one. Kosch scored three of the four runs.
The Jaguars got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame and five singles in a row plated three runs to put Newberry at an early 3-0 disadvantage.
Newberry answered in the top of the third as Kosch led off with a single through the right side. Bradley followed up with an infield single to the second baseman. Three batters later Sheridan picked up his second hit of the day as he drove a ball back up the middle to score Kosch from third. A hit by pitch loaded the bases but GRU Augusta got out of the jam with a fly out to right and keep the score at 3-1.
The Wolves tacked on another in the top of the seventh as Kosch reach on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later Baur scored Kosch on a two-out single to right to cut the score to 3-2 in favor of the home team.
GRU Augusta had an answer in the bottom half of the seventh as a one out single scored on a sacrifice fly after to advancing to second on a batter being hit by a pitch and to third on a wild pitch later in the next at bat.
D.J. Martinez (Montpelier, Va.) led off the top of the ninth with a single through the left side and Kosch followed him up with a hit down the left field line to start a rally with no outs. After a lineout, Baur posted his second hit with a single back through the middle to plate Martinez and cut the Jags lead to one. The next batter, Sneed, came up and grounded out to second in a productive at bat to plate Kosch and tie the game at four-all.
However, it was just not in the cards for the Wolves on this particular day as a two-out single gave the Jaguars some life. The runner advanced to second as the next batter drew a walk. A single to the second baseman ended the game as Newberry came up on the wrong side of the 5-4 score.
Newberry will get back on the diamond tomorrow as they host the Limestone Saints with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
