AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Newberry College Wolves dropped the season opener on Saturday afternoon in an 11-1 decision to the GRU Augusta Jaguars at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Wolves pounded out 10 hits but were only about to plate one run on the afternoon.

Junior JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) and senior Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) led Newberry offensively, each with 2-for-4 performances. Junior Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.), sophomore Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) and senior Ty Powell (Charleston, S.C.) each added a hit apiece. Senior Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) blasted a double off the right field wall while junior Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) and senior Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) each picked up pinch hit singles in the ninth.

The Wolves got off to a quick start as Bradley belted a triple to right to start off the game. Gonzalez followed up with an RBI groundout to the shortstop to give Newberry an early 1-0 advantage.

Senior Cole Cromer (North Augusta, S.C.) took the mound for the Wolves and saw some early struggles as the Jaguars answered right back with a pair of runs, one on an RBI double by Nick Rau. Rau would then score on a sacrifice fly by CJ Reed.

Sheridan led off the top of the second with a double but the Wolves could not plate him and came up empty. GRU Augusta pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the second as Connor Gilbert and Cole Thompson hit back to back singles and later scored on a single up the middle by Hardy to set the score at 4-1.

Newberry threatened again in the top of the third with a leadoff walk to Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.). Two batters later, Gonzalez executes a perfect hit and run play to put runners on the corners with one out. But the Jaguars were able to escape unscathed yet again, as Gonzalez went to steal second and the second baseman had the ball tip off of his glove and roll toward centerfield. The shortstop picked up the loose ball and made a Derek Jeter-like throw to nab Kosch trying take home and end the inning.

Drew Taylor led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple and later scored on a double to extend the Jaguars lead to 5-1. Senior right-handed pitcher Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) came in the game with nobody out and a runner at second and slammed the door on the Jaguars.

Rosenberger and GRU Augusta starter Tyler Brown each traded scoreless innings before the Wolves threated for a fourth time in the top of the sixth inning. With one out Baur blistered a standup double off the right center field wall. Sneed then followed up with a ground ball through the five hole to put runners on the corners with one out. Sheridan hit a hard ground ball back up the middle but Jaguar second baseman Nick Rau made an outstanding play to field the ball and turn a 4-3 double play, just getting Sheridan at first.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the sixth as GRU Augusta strung together three hits in a row and scored four runs in the inning, three of which were earned. That made the score 9-1 in favor of the Jaguars.

Senior Cory Brown (Ocean, N.J.) came on in relief of Rosenberger to toss 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, the only pitcher on the Wolves staff to not allow a run on the day.

Bradley smoked a one-out single back up the middle and advanced to second as Gonzalez was later hit by a pitch. Baur hit a laser to centerfield that was tracked down and Sneed was robbed of a hit by another great defensive play by Rau that saved yet another run for the Jaguars.

GRU Augusta tagged on two more runs in the bottom half of the eighth as freshman John Mason Reynolds (Taylors, S.C.) saw his first action of his career and recorded a strike out.

Schrenker and Stanland put together back to back two out singles in the top of the ninth but Hardy closed the door on the Wolves and sealed up the win for the Jaguars.

Tyler Brown picked up the win for GRU Augusta while Cromer was tagged with the loss for the Wolves.

Newberry looks for revenge tomorrow as they host the Jaguars with a 2 p.m. first pitch at the Smith Road Complex with live video on www.NewberryWolves.tv. Senior lefthander Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) will get the start for the Wolves, the preseason first team All-SAC and All-Southeast Region selection was 8-3 with a 2.32 ERA and 66 strike outs in 100.2 innings pitched a year ago.
